The Forum on Windsor Street in Halifax is home to the Saint Mary's Huskies, but on Friday night there was a distinctive Prince Edward Island feel to the venerable old rink.
Parker Deighan (1st year, Summerside, PEI) scored a goal and two assists to lead Saint Mary's (1-2-0) to victory over the UPEI Panthers by a score of 4-1 in front of 705 fans at The Forum.
Fellow PEI native Trevor Carmichael (1st year, Albany) also scored and veteran islanders Colby Pridham (4th year, Alberton,) and Brad Smith (3rd year, Summerside) chipped in with assists.
Fifth year senior and Summerside native Devon Praught tallied the lone marker for the Panthers (1-2-0). Michael Strickland (2nd year, Red Deer, Alberta) and Cam Fergus (5th year, Brantford, Ont) scored the first two goals of the game early in the first period to spark the Huskies in their 2011/12 home opener.
Saint Mary's goaltender Neil Conway (3rd year, Painsville, Ont) made 31 saves while UPEI rookie netminder Mavric Parks (Eganville, Ont) allowed one goal on 24 shots after relieving Jhase Sniderman (4th year, Toronto, Ont) late in the first period with the Huskies leading 3-0.
The Huskies won't have much time to celebrate as they'll need to prepare for the defending CIS champion UNB Varsity Reds visiting tomorrow night at 7:00. The Reds are 3-0 so far this season and sit atop the national rankings at number one.
The Huskies (2010) and Varsity Reds (2009/2011) have combined to win the last three national championships. Webcast available at www.news-cast.com.
