Huskies drop Tigers 69-59 at Dalplex

(Halifax, NS) – At the annual Shoot for the Cure game, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted Saint-Mary's Huskies at Dalplex on Saturday evening. The Tigers fell short of a come back and lost the game to the Huskies 69-59.

Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, NS) got on board first with a layup for the Tigers, but it was answered right away by a layup from Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON). The teams came out aggressive on the offensive end of the floor, as both teams converted on their first four attempts of the six they had. After the first layup, McMillan continued to go on a scoring streak as she hit two of two from the three point line.

While the beginning of the first quarter for both teams started on fire in the offensive end, both teams struggled for the second half of the quarter. The Tigers were 4-16 from the field, while the Huskies were 7-18 and led at the end of the first quarter 20-13.

After Kendra MacKinnon (Pictou, NS) and Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) both hit a three each, the Huskies were 8-16 from beyond the arc and had control of the game as they led 36-20 in the second quarter. Wilson led the charge for the Tigers, as she continued to attack the basket and get layups around the rim however, the Tigers were down by 14 as the Huskies led 39-25 at the half-time mark.

With 12 points at half-time, McMillan came out aggressive once again. She converted two for two from the field and extended the Huskies' lead to 21. The first five minutes of the third were scoreless for the Tigers, but with a drive and a layup on the left side from Ariel Provo (Lake Echo, NS) and a three pointer from Chelsea Slawter-Wright (Dartmouth, NS) they finally got on the board. The Tigers still trailed 46-30.

Despite the early struggles from the three point line, the Tigers were able to get going. After Slawter-Wright hit another three, Meghan Greenland (St.John's NL) added a three for the team.

The Huskies led 53-38 at the end of the third.

Greenland continued where she left off in the third, hitting another two three pointers at the beginning of the fourth. Wilson led the charge for the Tigers with 15 points as she established herself in the key while Slawter-Wright added 15 points of her own.

Hannah Chadwick (Toronto, ON) got in foul trouble in the first three quarters as she picked up four fouls, but in the fourth quarter, she stepped up. She got back-to-back layups and an and-one to help the team cut the lead to ten late in the fourth.

Late efforts from the Tigers weren't enough to make a comeback as the Huskies won it 69-59.

Subway player of the game went to the Huskies' McMillan. She finished the game with 18 points and five assists.

The Tigers will face Cape Breton Capers on January 31 at Cape Breton University, while the Huskies will play host to Memorial Sea-Hawks at the Homburg Centre.
