HALIFAX, NS)—The first forty minutes of their match on Sunday afternoon, the Saint Mary's Huskies could do no wrong in Atlantic University Sport rugby action from Huskies Stadium.
SMU held a slim 12-5 advantage over the visiting UPEI Panthers as the Huskies ended the half with a great goal-line stance, stymieing the Panther offence.
The Huskies opened the scoring with a long run and try from winger Kathryn Steeves (Stellarton, NS) and led 7-0.
Saint Mary's added to their scoring—using a tap and go restart coming off a UPEI penalty—to string together multiple passes from their backs as scrum-half Julie Naugler (Stillwater Lake, NS) had SMU up 12-0.
The Panthers scored off an awarded penalty as Brinten Comeau (Halifax, NS) weaved down the field and scored the try as UPEI trailed 12-5 at half.
UPEI would outscore SMU 20-0 in the second half and hang on for the 25-12 victory.
The Panthers improve to 1-2 on the year as SMU falls to 0-3.
Both teams return to action September 28thwhen UPEI travels to USports # 8 Acadia Axewomen and SMU hits the road versus the second-ranked team in the country, the 3-0 StFX X-Women.
