Huskies pick off three passes, defeat Axemen 30-8 in Wolfville

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Saint Mary's secondary dominated, holding the Axemen to 96 passing yards and picking off three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, as the Huskies defeated the Acadia Axemen 30-8 in Atlantic University Sport football action on Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field in Wolfville, N.S.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team able to generate much offensive momentum. The Huskies defence made big plays, including an interception by defensive back Aidan Simpson (Pickering, ON), and a sack from defensive lineman Romareo Reid (Calgary, AB), but the offence wasn't able to capitalize and the teams remained scoreless after 15 minutes of play.

It didn't take long into the second quarter for Saint Mary's offence to break through, thanks to the blossoming connection between quarterback Justin Shibley (Ottawa, ON) and receiver Cherokee Robinson (Halifax, NS). First Shibley aired out a deep pass for a streaking Robinson, who dove to haul in a 50-yard reception.

Two plays later, Shibley found a wide-open Robinson in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown, with Adam Johnston (Rothesay,NB) converting the point after to make it 7-0.

The Axemen responded by driving down field for a Nick Swain (Moncton, NB) field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

Later in the quarter, the Huskies added to their lead, after Shibley connected with receiver Joshua Jack (Brampton, ON) for a 50-yard gain.

With the Huskies at the goal-line, running back Malik Williams (Ajax, ON) plunged it in for his league-leading seventh rushing touchdown of the campaign, giving the Huskies a 14-3 lead.

The Saint Mary's defence wasn't done making big plays yet - defensive back Onochie Amuta (Scarborough, ON) jumped a route and intercepted Axemen quarterback Tyran Duval (Abbotsford, BC), returning it 34-yards for the pick six touchdown.

The Axemen hit a field goal just before halftime to cut the Huskies lead to 21-6 after the first half.

The opening drives of the third quarter were a battle of field position, with Adam Johnston hitting a 29-yard field goal, before Saint Mary's conceded a safety to extend their lead to 24-8 through three quarters of play.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Huskies secondary made their third big play of the game, with defensive back Ryan Butler (Mississauga, ON) picking off Ryan Linder (Fredericton, NB).

The Huskies added six more points to their lead late in the game, off a single point off a Cameron Brown (Hammonds Plains, NS) punt, a 35-yard Adam Johnston field goal, and an Axemen safety, to secure the 30-8 victory.

The Huskies offence was led by the two-headed rushing attack of Liam Legge (19 rushes for 147 yards) and Malik Williams (16 rushes for 80 yards and a touchdown), who combined for 214 rushing yards.

It was a quiet day for the Huskies passing offence, with Justin Shibley completing seven of 14 passes for 157 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Cherokee Robinson hauled in two catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Jack caught two balls for 49 yards.

Defensively the Huskies were led by Romareo Reid with six tackles and a sack, while Onochie Amuta, Ryan Butler and Aidan Simpson each intercepted a pass, with Amuta returning his for a touchdown.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-1 on the season. They'll next take on the Mount Allison Mounties (0-5) on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Huskies Stadium, as part of Huskies Homecoming weekend. GET TICKETS
