Huskies hit school record 18 threes in 97-65 win over Sea-Hawks

ST. JOHN'S, NL – The Saint Mary's Huskies shot the lights out at the Memorial Fieldhouse, dropping a school record 18 three-pointers in a 97-65 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action on Friday night in St. John's, NL.

The Huskies got off to a strong start, with back-to-back three-pointers from guards Jasha'jaun Downey (North Preston, NS) and Jayrell Diggs (East Preston, NS) to open up a quick 6-0 lead. The Sea-Hawks cut the lead to 6-5, but the Huskies responded with a three from Marc-Denault Gabriel (Montreal, QC) and a thunderous transition dunk from centre Eliel Nsoseme (Kinshasa, DRC) to push their lead to 11-5.

Saint Mary's put on an incredible shooting display in the first quarter, shooting 8/17 from beyond-the-arc with five different players - Downey, Diggs, Marc-Denault Gabriel, Jonah Crowther and Devawn White - hitting from distance, as the Huskies took a 28-10 lead after the first quarter.

The Huskies sharp-shooting continued into the second quarter, with forward Jonah Crowther (Dartmouth, NS) starting the quarter with another three make, his second of the night. Back-to-back lay-ins for Huskies guards Aidan MacDonald and Marc-Denault Gabriel, followed by a Jayrell Diggs jumper pushed the lead to 47-21 midway through the second quarter.

But the Sea-Hawks found some offensive momentum of their own, closing the quarter on a 13-7 run, and the Huskies took a 54-34 advantage into halftime. The Huskies shot an incredible 10/23 from beyond-the-arc in the first half, and were led by Jayrell Diggs and Jonah Crowther, who each scored 11 first quarter points including two threes each, while Marc-Denault Gabriel added 10, including two threes of his own. The Sea-Hawks were led by forward Norm Burry (Grafton, NB) who led all scorers with 12 first half points.

The third quarter appeared to be headed for more of the same, as Gabriel hit back-to-back threes, giving the Huskies a 62-36 lead. Jonah Crowther hit his third three of the game to extend the lead to 67-44, but the Sea-Hawks finished the quarter on a 8-2 run, with the Huskies taking a 69-52 lead into the final frame.

After scoring just 15 points in the third quarter, the Huskies caught fire again in the fourth, dropping 28 points including five more threes. Jasha'jaun Downey hit two threes on his way to 10 fourth quarter points and first year Mason Thurber joined the party, splashing a three off the bench. The Huskies finished the night in style, with Aidan MacDonald (Timberlea, NS) connecting with Tjark Lademacher (Lüneburg, Germany) for a thunderous alley-oop jam. By the time the shooting session was over, the Huskies tied a Saint Mary's men's basketball record by hitting 18 three-pointers, and scored a season-high 97 points, coasting to a 97-65 win.

The Huskies were led by guard Marc-Denault Gabriel who finished the night with 20 points on 7/9 from the floor and 5/7 from three, adding eight rebounds, one steal and one block. Jasha'jaun Downey added 18 points, including four threes, Jonah Crowther came off the bench to score a career high 17 points including 3/6 threes, Jayrell Diggs hit a trio of threes on his way to 16 points and seven rebounds, and Eliel Nsoseme dominated inside with a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double, and blocking three shots. Seven different Huskies (Gabriel, Downey, Diggs, Crowther, Devawn White, Aidan MacDonald and Mason Thurber) hit threes on the night.

The Sea-Hawks were led in defeat by forward Norm Burry, who scored 20 points and added nine rebounds. AUS leading scorer Flynn Boardman Raffet recorded an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double, but was held to just 2/12 shooting from the floor, and Joshua Francis added 11 points off the Sea-Hawks bench.

The Huskies win improves their record to 5-8 on the season, while the Sea-Hawks fall to 7-6. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. ADT.
