McDonnell scores winning goal as Huskies defeat Aigles Bleus 3-2, tie up AUS semifinal

MONCTON, NB - Saint Mary's captain Declan McDonnell scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, giving the Huskies a 3-2 victory over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in game two of the best-of-five Atlantic University Sport men's hockey semifinal on Friday night at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in front of 1,200 spectators.

Fresh off a decisive 9-2 game one victory, it appeared the Aigles Bleus carried that momentum into game two, as they took an early 2-0 lead. Moncton forward Remy Anglehart scored two goals in 42 seconds, giving the Aigles Bleus a 2-0 lead after the first period.

But the Huskies cut into that lead midway through the second period, as AUS MVP Derek Gentile scored a powerplay goal, 7:06 into the period, to cut the Aigles Bleus lead to 2-1.

The Huskies continued to search for an equalizer into the third period, and found one at the 6:44 mark, as forward Charlie Da Fonseca received a pass from linemate Bradey Johnson and scored, tying the game at 2-2, 6:44 into the third period.

Both teams played the remainder of the third period tight, and the game seemed destined for overtime, until the final seconds when Declan McDonnell pounced on the rebound of a Ben Boyd shot and beat Aigles Bleus goaltender Olivier Adam. McDonnell's goal came with just 11 seconds remaining in the third period, stealing game two on the Aigles Bleus home ice and evening the series at one game a piece.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 35-28 on the night, but Huskies netminder Justin Sumarah was outstanding, stopping 33 shots for the win, while Aigles Bleus goaltender Olivier Adam stopped 25 shots in defeat.

The series now shifts back to Halifax, as the Huskies will host the Moncton Aigles Bleus for games three and four on Monday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 4 at the Homburg Centre, with both games dropping the puck at 7 p.m. GET TICKETS
