Huskies Men’s Soccer announces 2024 recruiting class

Saint Mary's Huskies men's soccer coach Mesut Mert is pleased to announce the commitment of nine recruits that will be joining the Huskies for the 2024 season.

"We are very excited to welcome this talented group of student-athletes to the Huskies family," says Mert. "Our program continues to characterize its strong bond to local talent and show versatility to draw players from out of province. The program offers a strong culture for players to continue to enjoy the game, improve as a player and person. The players we have added make our team more competitive and stronger in depth as needed in the postseason."  

The Huskies will kick-off the 2024 season on home field as they host the STFX X-Men on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:15 p.m. at Huskies Stadium.

Will Brown

A striker / winger from Halifax, N.S., Will Brown joins the Huskies out of Citadel High School and Halifax City Soccer Club.

Brown helped lead the Citadel High Phoenix to the 2023-24 NSSAF Provincial Championship, leading the team in goals. Brown also helped the Phoenix to a NSSAF Provincial gold in 2021-22, and silver in 2022-23.

During the 2023 NSSL U17 summer season, Brown led the league in goals (31) and points (48), and helped lead Halifax City to the provincial and league championships, and an appearance at the 2023 Canada Soccer U17 National Cup, finishing as the bronze medallist and being named a Second Team All-Star.

"Going to Saint Mary's this fall is an exciting opportunity to attain my goal of playing soccer at the university level while also studying business," says Brown. "I am looking forward to being able to play in front of family and friends, contributing to the program and polishing my skills for the next four years."

Brown will be studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Saint Mary's.

 

Drew Chisholm

A 5'9" attacking midfielder / striker from Dartmouth, N.S., Drew Chisholm joins the Huskies out of Auburn Drive High School and United DFC.

Chisholm was named MVP of the Auburn Drive Eagles soccer team in back-to-back seasons, also leading the team in goals both years, scoring a total of 52 goals over his grade 11 and 12 seasons.

Chisholm currently plays for the United DFC senior men's AAA team, following a standout U17 career, where he finished top five in the NSSL U17 scoring race in back-to-back seasons and led United DFC to the gold medal at the 2023 U17 Gaels Cup in Kingston, ON.

Chisholm is described as a technically strong, unselfish player, who has a knack for finishing and is willing to do whatever it takes to win.

Chisholm will be studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Saint Mary's.

 

Zach Collier

A 5'11" midfielder from Lawrencetown, N.S., Zach Collier joins the Huskies out of École secondaire Mosaïque and Suburban FC.

Collier was named the Mosaïque boys soccer most valuable player in both 11th and 12th grade, and helped lead the Mustangs to a NSSAF Provincial bronze medal in 2023-24. He also was a member of the Whitecaps FC Development Academy.

A versatile player, Collier can play anywhere in the midfield or wingback, and says his aggressive defending and ability to make plays for his teammate are strengths of his game.

"I'm very excited to be joining the Huskies family in the next academic year!" says Collier. "To further my studies while playing the sport I love has always been a dream of mine."

Collier will be studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Saint Mary's.

 

Quentin Currie

A 6'3" centre back from Ottawa, ON, Quentin Currie joins the Huskies out of St. Paul High School and Ottawa Impact FC.

Currie attended the 2023 First Touch Football Halifax Combine, where he was named to the combine Starting XI.

Currie is described as a technically clean and strong defender, that uses his size well. Offensively, he shows great passing range and is very good at managing the game in front of him.

"I am ready to challenge myself in a new environment, and look forward to meeting new people and making connections," says Currie. "I want to get results as a team, and as a player, with the ultimate goal of winning an AUS Championship with the Huskies!"

Currie will be studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology, at Saint Mary's.

 

Isaac Mathers

A 5'11" goalkeeper originally from Vancouver, B.C., Isaac Mathers joins the Huskies out of Citadel High School and Halifax City Soccer Club.

Mathers helped lead the Citadel High Phoenix to the 2023-24 NSSAF Provincial Championship as starting goalkeeper. During the 2023 NSSL U17 summer season, Mathers helped lead Halifax City to the provincial and league championships, and an appearance at the 2023 Canada Soccer U17 National Cup, finishing as the bronze medallist.

"The opportunity to attend Saint Mary's this fall and play soccer at the next level, while also studying computer science, is one I look forward to," says Mathers. "I'm excited to contribute to the Huskies soccer program and become a part of the Saint Mary's community!"

Mathers will be studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at Saint Mary's.

 

Mateo Santos-Brown

A 6'0" centre back from London, ON, Mateo Santos-Brown joins the Huskies out of École secondaire Monseigneur-Bruyère and FC London.

Santos-Brown helped lead É.S. Monseigneur-Bruyère to an undefeated 2023-24 season.

"I am thrilled to be joining Saint Mary's and am eager to contribute to the future success of the Huskies!" says Santos-Brown.

Santos-Brown will be studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology, at Saint Mary's.

 

Lachlan Sylvester

A 6'1" centre midfielder from Hackett's Cove, N.S., Lachlan 'Lockie' Sylvester joins the Huskies out of Bayview High School and Suburban FC.

During his time at Bayview High, Sylvester helped lead his team to the 2021-22 Capital Region Championship and a bronze medal finish at the NSSAF Provincial Championship, as well as a fourth place NSSAF Provincial finish in 2023-24.

Sylvester was then named the #48 recruit in the class of 2024 by First Touch Football Canada. Sylvester attended the 2023 First Touch Football Halifax Combine, where he was named the Top Midfielder, and to the combine Starting XI.

Sylvester will be studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Saint Mary's.

 

Liam Vargas

A 5'6" centre midfielder from Halifax, N.S., Liam Vargas joins the Huskies out of Halifax West High School and Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club.

During Vargas' time at Halifax West, he helped lead the team to medals at three consecutive NSSAF provincial championships - bronze in 2024, gold in 2023 and silver in 2022. 

Vargas also represented the Halifax Wanderers FC U18 team at the 2023 Canada Youth Cup National Showcase, as well as the Whitecaps FC Development Academy 'Caps to College' team.

Vargas is described as a technical midfielder that excels in tight spaces and creates goal scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Vargas will be studying a Bachelor of Science at Saint Mary's.

 

Jake Wilcox

A 5'10" midfielder from Halifax, N.S., Jake Wilcox joins the Huskies out of Citadel High School and Halifax City Soccer Club.

Wilcox helped lead the Citadel High Phoenix to the 2023-24 NSSAF Provincial Championship. Wilcox also helped the Phoenix to a NSSAF Provincial gold in 2021-22, and silver in 2022-23.

During the 2023 NSSL U17 summer season, Wilcox helped lead Halifax City to the provincial and league championships, and an appearance at the 2023 Canada Soccer U17 National Cup, finishing as the bronze medallist.

Wilcox is described as a technical midfielder, with strong vision, awareness, distribution and work ethic. 

"I am looking forward to studying Engineering at one of the top schools in the country," says Wilcox. "I am also excited to play for a great coach in Mesut, and thankful for the opportunity to play for a team with a history of success, and continue to learn and grow on-and-off the pitch."

Wilcox has a prominent family connection to the Saint Mary's athletic department, as his great-great-uncle is Saint Mary's Hall of Famer Elmer MacGillivray, who was a pioneer of Huskies athletics, winning football, hockey and baseball championships during his time at Saint Mary's and going on to coach the football team.
