Dikdan leads Huskies to 72-67 win, weekend sweep over Capers
HALIFAX, NS - Saint Mary's forward Emily Dikdan scored 18 points and added nine rebounds, leading the Huskies to a 72-67 win over the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.
For the second straight day, the Capers came out of the gates strong, with guard Alicia Bowering (Orangeville, ON) hitting a three-pointer to give them an early lead, but Huskies guard Lauren Armstrong (Canberra, Australia) answered with a three of her own.

The Huskies also received good production from forward Evie Hargraves (Saint John, NB) who hit a three and blocked a shot. But Capers guard Amanda Cruickshank (Montreal, QC) continued to attack the basket, going 4/4 from the free-throw line on her way to eight first quarter points, and Cape Breton took a 19-14 lead after the first quarter of play.

Cape Breton continued to grow their lead in the second quarter, with Alicia Bowering's third three-pointer of the first half putting them up 33-25 with over three minutes to play. But Huskies guard Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) responded with a personal 7-0 run over the last two minutes, with her late three-pointer tying the game at 33-33 heading into halftime.

The Huskies momenteum continued into the second half, with back-to-back lay-ups from Evie Hargraves (Saint John, NB) and Emily Dikdan ( Sudbury, ON) putting them ahead 37-33. The Capers responded with back-to-back threes from guards Kristen Taylor (Fredericton, NB) and Lily Francois (Cole Harbour, NS), bookended by another Dikdan lay-in to tie it up 39-39.
Angong Jacob and Lauren Armstrong continued their spectacular play, combining for 11 third quarter points including a trio of triples, as Huskies opened up a 54-46 lead. But Bowering and Taylor answered with 12 points of their own, and Capers went on a run to make it an even quarter, heading into the third tied at 54-54.

Early in the fourth quarter, Emily Dikdan scored an and-one lay-up to put the Huskies ahead 59-56. Four straight free-throws from guard Molly Healy (St. John's, NL) extended the lead to 63-56, but Cruickshank responded with a three to cut the Capers deficit down to four.

After Lauren Armstrong hit a driving lay-up, another Cruickshank three cut the Huskies lead to 68-67 with just over a minute remaining. Molly Healy drove in for a left-handed lay-up to put Saint Mary's up 70-67, and after a couple big defensive stands from the Huskies, Dikdan iced the game with two free-throws to secure the 72-67 victory.

Huskies forward Emily Dikdan was named Player of the Game, scoring 18 points, including 10/11 free-throws, and collecting nine rebounds. Lauren Armstrong added 14 points, Angong Jacob scored 13, and Evie Hargraves stuffed the stat-sheet with 11 points, five rebounds, four blocks, two steals and two assists.
The Capers were led by guard Alicia Bowering's 18 points including 6/11 three-point shooting, while Amanda Cruickshank added 17 points.
The Huskies improve to 2-0 on the campaign, while the Capers drop to 0-2. The Huskies will visit the UPEI Panthers (0-2) for a pair of games next Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1, while the Capers host the UNB REDS (2-0) on the same days.
