Axewomen defeat Huskies 81-52

Despite a season-high 24 points from Saint Mary's wing Angong Jacob, the Huskies were defeated 81-52 by the Acadia Axewomen in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Friday night in Wolfville, N.S.

The Axewomen came out of the gates red hot, with all-star wing Samantha Russell dropping eight first quarter points, giving the Axewomen a 27-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.

The Huskies bounced back in the second quarter, thanks in part to eight points a piece from guard Lauren Armstrong and wing Angong Jacob, but Acadia took a 44-29 lead into halftime.

Acadia pulled away in the third quarter, finishing the frame on a 18-2 run, and taking a 64-35 lead into the fourth.

The Huskies played the Axewomen even in the fourth quarter, thanks largely to 10 points from Jacob, and saw a contribution from first year Stella Niedermayer who hit a pair of free-throws for the first points of her Huskies career, but the Axewomen held on for the 81-52 victory.

Acadia was led by 17 points, six assists and four steals from Samantha Russell, while Sarah Delorey chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds.

Huskies wing Angong Jacob led all scorers with a season-high 24 points, while Lauren Armstrong chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Axewomen improve to 8-4 with the win, while the Huskies drop to 4-7. Saint Mary's will next visit the STFX X-Women (7-4) on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. in Antigonish, N.S., while the Axewomen will head to Newfoundland next weekend to play the Memorial Sea-Hawks (4-7) on Friday and Saturday.
