REDS defeat Huskies 3-1 in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, NB - The UNB REDS defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday, in UNB's annual Pride Game.

In support of the theme, the REDS sported special Pride jerseys.

First-year RED Lilly Bell (Waterloo, ON) was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.

The REDS started strong on defense, allowing the Huskies only two shots on net in the first period.

The scoring began with a goal by UNB's Mackenzie Keenan (Midhurst, ON) at 16:06 of the first.

The REDS wasted little time in extending that lead in the second period with back-to-back goals by Bell and Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) just 48 second apart, at 0:36 and 1:22.

Despite continued pressure in the second, Huskies' goalie Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) held off further REDS attempts.

Early in the third period, Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) scored the final goal of the game, putting the Huskies on the board just 58 seconds in.

Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) made 11 saves in the UNB net. Hansen made 19.

With the win, the REDS are now 10-1-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) while the Huskies are 6-4-1-1.

The REDS are back on home ice Friday night to take on the Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m.

The Huskies will host the St. Thomas Tommies on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre at 7 p.m. GET TICKETS
