Sea-Hawks defeat Huskies 3-2

HALIFAX, NS - Memorial forward Zoe Rowe scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Sea-Hawks defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, N.S.

The Huskies opened the scoring early, as just over five minutes into the match, winger Lindy Brunelle (Keswick, ON) played a ball up the left wing to a sprinting Charlotte Baines (Halifax, NS) who evaded one Sea-Hawks defender and drew the help of another before playing a perfect pass to forward Cara Freeman (Halifax, NS) who deked out the goalkeeper and slid the ball into goal for her second goal in as many games, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

But the Sea-Hawks were able to equalize just 10 minutes later, as defender Kendra Schram (Brandon, MB) played a cross into the box that found the head of Zoe Rowe (Conception Bay South, NL) who directed it past Huskies goalkeeper Katie Alley (Milton, ON) to tie the match at 1-1 in the 16th minute.

Memorial added to their lead several minutes later, when forward Jen Milligan (Strathroy, ON) snuck in across the goal line and played a pass back to winger Claire Langille (Windsor Junction, NS) who volleyed it into goal to give the Sea-Hawks a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute.

But the Huskies equalized thanks to an outstanding shot from midfielder Brenna Kennedy (Fletcher's Lake, NS) who received a pass from Freeman and fired a shot from over 20-yards out that beat Sea-Hawks goalkeeper Leana Claude (Grenchen, Switzerland) into the top corner and tied the match at 2-2 in the 40th minute.

The second half saw the Huskies and Sea-Hawks exchange opportunities, but solid defensive plays and goalkeeper from Alley and Claude kept the match tied. That is until the 76th minute, when Memorial substitute Bethany Lee (St. John's, NL) played a cross into the box for Zoe Rowe, who turned and while falling to the pitch, was able to fire a shot past Alley to give the Sea-Hawks the 3-2 lead.

Saint Mary's pushed for another equalizer but came up short, and the Sea-Hawks secured the 3-2 win.

Memorial forward Zoe Rowe was named Player of the Game with two goals. Sea-Hawks keeper Leana Claude made three saves in the win, while Huskies keeper Katie Alley stopped two shots in defeat.

Both teams now sport a 1-1-0 record heading into next weekends play. The Sea-Hawks will host the UPEI Panthers (0-1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1:00 p.m. NST, while the Huskies will host the STFX X-Women (0-1-1) on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. AST at Huskies Stadium. GET TICKETS
