Allison leads Huskies to 6-4 win over Panthers

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Ben Allison scored two goals and added an assist, helping lead the Huskies to a 6-4 win over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

Both teams had good opportunities early, but the goaltenders were sharp, with Huskies netminder Marcus Vandenberg (Dorchester, ON) and Panthers goalie Jakob Robillard (Wendover, ON) both making quality saves to keep the game scoreless.

That changed with just under two minutes remaining in the first period, as Robillard went to play the puck behind the goal, and Huskies forward Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) intercepted it, playing a quick pass in front to Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) who made no mistake, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead with 1:50 remaining in the first period.

Both teams recorded 12 shots in the first period, as the Huskies took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

The Huskies came out aggressively to start the second, peppering Robillard with shots. They were able to capitalize when Ben Allison won a face-off in the Panthers end and played a nice pass to Matthew MacDonald (Halifax, NS) who had the pass knocked off his stick right to forward Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) who fired it over Robillard's shoulder to make it 2-0 Huskies, 7:16 into the second period.

Just three minutes later, Matthew MacDonald added to the Huskies lead, as defenceman Connor Olson (London, ON) deked through Panthers defenders and played a quick pass over to MacDonald, who sniped a snapshot into the UPEI net to extend the Saint Mary's lead to 3-0, 10:49 into the period.

Despite taking a penalty, the Huskies offensive onslaught kept on rolling, as forward Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) made a great play, breaking up a Panthers pass off a face-off in the Huskies zone and turning on the jets, beating Robillard five-hole for an unassisted shorthanded goal, extending the Huskies lead to 4-0, 14:42 into the period.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 22-10 in the second period, taking a 34-22 advantage on the night, and a 4-0 lead into second intermission.

But the Panthers had a comeback effort left in the tank. Just over three minutes into the third period, the visitors capitalized on a powerplay opportunity when Josh Currie (Pickering, ON) played a nice pass in front to Patrick LeBlanc (Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, NB) to cut the lead to 4-1.

UPEI kept on coming and further cut into the lead less than a minute later, as defenceman Robert Orr (Beaconsfield, QC) tee'd up Zach Biggar (Coleman, PEI) for a powerplay one-timer, cutting the lead to 4-2, 4:27 into the second period.

On the ensuing face-off, the Panthers struck again, as a shot from Michael Stubbs (Thunder Bay, ON) was stopped by Vandenberg, but the rebound ricochetted out to the point to defenceman Cole Larkin (Mermaid, PEI) who launched a shot that fooled Vandenberg high, cutting the Huskies lead to 4-3 at the 4:40 mark.

But Saint Mary's was able to respond, thanks to a great individual effort from captain Charlie Da Fonseca, as he stole a pass in the Huskies zone and broke out on a two-on-one with Reid Valade, and attempted to play a pass over to Valade that was deflected by Robillard but ended up in the Panthers goal, extending the Huskies lead to 5-3 at the 6:14 mark of the third.

Ben Allison's second goal of the night helped seal the win – on a Huskies powerplay, Reid Valade played a nice backhand pass to Allison, who broke out a filthy deke to fool Robillard before stuffing it behind his pad to extend the lead to 6-3, 12:54 into the third.

That insurance marker proved necessary, as UPEI's Josh Currie scored a powerplay goal at the 14:52 mark to cut the lead to 6-4, but it was too little too late, as the Huskies held on for the 6-4 win.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 45-33 on the night, with Marcus Vandenberg stopping 29 shots for his first career AUS regular season win, while Jakob Robillard turned away 39 shots in defeat.

Huskies forward Ben Allison was named Player of the Game with two goals and an assist, while Charlie Da Fonseca (one goal, two assists), Reid Valade (one goal, one assist) and Matthew MacDonald (one goal, one assist) also recorded multi-point nights for Saint Mary's.

The Huskies improve to a league-leading 3-0-0 to begin the campaign, and will next host the UNB REDS (2-1-0) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS.
