Valade's late winner beats Tigers 3-2, Huskies remain undefeated

HALIFAX, NS - Saint Mary's forward Reid Valade scored the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining in the third period, lifting the Huskies to a 3-2 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night at the Halifax Forum.

The Huskies hit the scoreboard first, as Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) skated into Tigers territory and dropped a pass for limemate Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) who snapped a shot that was saved by Tigers netminder Carter Richardson, but Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) jumped on the rebound to bury his seventh goal of the campaign - tying him with Valade for the league-lead - and giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead 6:17 into the first period.

Saint Mary's outshot Dalhousie 22-4, but Richardson made several great saves to keep the Tigers within one, and the Huskies took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

The Huskies doubled their lead just 50 seconds into the second period, as forward Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) blocked a shot, and sparked forward Matthew MacDonald on a breakaway, who beat Richardson five-hole to put Saint Mary's up 2-0.

The Tigers outshot the Huskies 13-12 in the second period, but it was the Huskies who took a 34-17 advantange in shots, and a 2-0 lead into second intermission.

The first 15 minutes of the third period continued to see the Huskies contain the Tigers, but the hosts were able to flip the script with a pair of late goals.

First forward Ethan Wongus was able to snap a shot past Marcus Vandenberg (Dorchester, ON) cutting the Huskies lead to 2-1 with 4:14 remaining in the third.

With less than two minutes remaining, the Tigers found themselves shorthanded, but pulled Richardson and were rewarded - after Reid Valade broke his stick on a empty net chance, the Tigers took advantage of the opportunity - Ethan Martini unleashed a one-timer from the point that was turned away by Vandenberg, but the rebound ricocheted to forward Zak Smith, who made no mistake, tying the game at 2-2 with 1:24 left in regulation.

But the top scoring line in the AUS could not be denied, as Allison collected a pass and dropped a nifty pass off to Valade, who fired a rocket wrist shot blocker side on Richardson, giving the Huskies the 3-2 victory.

Ben Allison was named Player of the Game with a goal and an assist, while Reid Valade (one goal, one assist) and Charlie Da Fonseca (two assists) added multi-point nights. The three linemates lead the AUS in scoring with Allison (seven goals, six assists) and Valade (eight goals, five assists) tied a top the leaderboard with 13 points each, while Da Fonseca (one goal, eight assists) is tied for third with 9 points.

Marcus Vandenberg stopped 28 shots for the win, while Carter Richardson made 41 saves in defeat.

The U SPORTS #9 ranked Huskies improve to 6-0-0 on the campaign, while the Tigers drop to 0-4-1-1. Saint Mary's will continue their road swing into next weekend, visiting the UNB REDS (3-2-1) on Friday in Fredericton, and UPEI Panthers (2-4-0) on Saturday in Charlottetown, with both games dropping the puck at 7 p.m.
