Huskies come-from-behind to defeat Tigers in 2-1 thriller

HALIFAX, NS - Saint Mary's forward Jalen Loague scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, securing the Huskies dramatic 2-1 win over crosstown rival Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Wickwire Field in Halifax.

The Tigers dominated play early, but Huskies first year goalkeeper Tomas Mello (Smiths, Bermuda) was outstanding, making several great saves in the first half. Thanks to Mello's heroics, the Huskies and Tigers went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0, despite a 6-1 shots on goal advantage for Dalhousie.

Dalhousie finally broke through in the 66th minute, as forward Ben Hashimoto (Charlottetown, PEI) was sent on a breakaway and beat a charging Mello with a shot to the bottom right corner of goal.

The Huskies pressed for an equalizer, and finally found one in the 81st minute, thanks to winger William Robichaud (Halifax, NS) who settled down a bouncing ball and fired a rocket of a shot from nearly 30 yards out, that beat Tigers goalkeeper Sinclair Astridge (Victoria, BC) to tie the match at 1-1.

In the 89th minute, Saint Mary's subsitute Drew Chisholm (Dartmouth, NS) intercepted a Tigers pass and flicked a nifty over-the-top pass into the box, which was volleyed in by the powerful right foot of Jalen Loague (London, ON), for the game-winning goal.

Tomas Mello was named Player of the Match, stopping eight shots in his AUS debut.

The Huskies win improves their record to 2-4-0 on the campagin, while the Tigers loss drops their record to 3-1-1. Both teams next contest will come on home field next Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m., with the Tigers hosting the Mount Allison Mounties (0-6-0), while the Huskies host the UNB REDS (2-2-1).
