HALIFAX, NS – Moncton goaltender Annick Boudreau stopped all 28 shots she faced, as the Aigles Bleues defeated the Huskies 1-0 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.
The Huskies had several quality scoring opportunities early, including a great chance when AUS league leading scorer Abigail MacKenzie (Stellarton, NS), played a quick pass to a wide open Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) but Annick Boudreau (Memramcook, NB) made a nice sliding save.
The Aigles Bleues opened the scoring 9:27 into the first period, as forward Erica Plourde (Pigeon-Hill, NB) fired a shot off the crossbar, and Amelie Vachon (Ste-Blaise sur Richelieu, QC) jumped on the rebound for her third goal of the season, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Later in the period, Huskies forward Renee Olsen (Yarmouth, NS) was sparked on a partial breakaway, but Boudreau once again made the save.
Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 12-7 through the first 20 minutes, but Moncton took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Aigles Bleues outshot the Huskies 9-6 in the second period, and maintained their 1-0 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The third period saw the Huskies continue to push for an equalizer as they outshot the Aigles Bleues 10-1, but Moncton's defence and Boudreau stood tall, as they held on for a 1-0 victory.
Annick Boudreau was named Player of the Game, turning away all 28 shots she faced, while Sophie Scully stopped 16 shots in defeat.
The Huskies drop to 6-6-0-1 and will be back in action at the Dauphinee Centre next weekend, hosting the Mount Allison Mounties (0-13-0-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m., and the STFX X-Women (9-3-0-0) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Aigles Bleues improve to 7-4-1-0 on the season and will continue their Halifax road trip on Saturday, as they visit the Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum.
