Huskies fall to Sherbrooke in Interlock action
(Halifax, NS)-- The visiting CIS No. 8 Sherbrooke Vert & Or swept the SMU Huskies 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-23) in their AUS-Quebec Interlock volleyball match Saturday afternoon.
Sherbrooke's Sarah-Jeanne Meunier (St-Jean-sur le Richeleiu, QC) led all hitters with 11.5 total points on ten kills and two aces. The Vert & Or held advantages in kills (39-31) and digs (50-47) and were even in aces (5-5).
Jumping out to leads of 3-1, 9-2 and 13-5, Sherbrooke controlled the attack in the first set. The Vert & Or increased their lead throughout the set, winning 25-11.
An opening second set had scores of 5-5 , 7-6, 13-11 for the Vert & Or. Sherbrooke would go up as high as five twice in the set, 16-11 and 17-12 when SMU clawed back, trimming the deficit to two, four different times (18-16, 19-17, 23-21 and 24-22) before dropping the set 25-22.
Two quick Huskie points saw SMU with their first lead of the match and the Huskies increased it to 4-1, 10-6 and 12-9 in the third set. A Sherbrooke four point run had the Vert & Or ahead 13-12.
Both teams traded points with SMU following Sherbrooke in ties, 13-13, 14-14 and 18-18. A six point Vert & Or run was too strong for SMU's five point run, 24-23. A Sherbrooke kill ended the set 25-23 and the match.
Jamie Rourke (Mission, BC) and Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) finished with 10.0 total points apiece for Saint Mary's. The Huskies return to action Sunday at 10am (UQAM) and 3pm (CIS No. 4 Montreal).
