Huskies men finish fourth as cross country kicks off 2025 season at UNB Invitational
FREDERICTON, NB — The Saint Mary's Huskies cross country teams kicked off their 2025 Atlantic University Sport season with a gritty showing at the UNB Invitational, hosted at scenic Odell Park in Fredericton.
In a competitive field featuring top programs from across the conference, the Huskies placed 4th overall on the men's side with a team score of 118 points.
Leading the Pack for SMU men:
- Zack Rogers led the way for the Huskies, finishing 19th overall with a time of 27:48.
- He was closely followed by Cole Miller (28:33, 23rd) and Cian Kelly (28:35, 24th), both running strong in the middle of the pack.
- Rounding out the scoring for SMU were Elijah Ford (29:23, 26th) and Zack Kennedy (29:31, 28th), helping secure valuable points in the team standings.
Huskies Highlights on the women's side:
- Mackenzie Hayduk led the charge for SMU, crossing the line in 32:05 (19th) showing early-season fitness and solid race execution.
- Rookie Frances MacLeod followed closely behind in 33:14 (27th), gaining valuable experience over the 8k course.
- Veteran Ashley Brady finished next for the Huskies, crossing the line in 37:04 (43rd).
Coach's Corner:
"It's a strong start to the season," said Co-Head Coach Ian MacDonald. "We've got a tight, dedicated group, and the guys executed our race plan well today. This was a good benchmark; now it's about tightening up the gaps and building from here."
"Even without a full team score today on the women's side, we saw really positive signs," said Co-Head Coach Jonathan Peverill. "The athletes handled a challenging course well, and this meet gives us a great foundation to build on for the next one."
