White's double-double powers Huskies to 87-74 win over Capers

SYDNEY, N.S. - Saint Mary's guard Devawn White stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three assists, helping lead the Huskies to a 87-74 win over the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action on Friday night in Sydney, N.S.

The teams were well matched in the first quarter, with the CAPERS staying close to the Huskies with the quarter finishing 25-21 in favour of SMU. The second quarter found the CAPERS trailing the Huskies again and staying right on their heels until around the 3-minute mark when SMU went on a run to close out the half ahead 44-33.

In the third quarter, the CAPERS struggled to find the hoop which allowed the Huskies to expand their lead to 70-54. The same held true for the final quarter. The Huskies offence dominated as they took the win 87-74.

Jayrell Diggs had the game high of 21 points and Jasha'jaun Downey followed with 18. Devawn White posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Marcus Green chipped in 12 points off the Huskies bench.

Aaron Cunningham led the way for the CAPERS with a double-double: 19 points and 10 rebounds. Liai Tong added 19 points and five rebounds and Tayshaun Thomas netted 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Huskies win improves their record to 4-11 on the season, while Cape Breton drops to 8-8. The two teams will meet again for a rematch on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Sydney, N.S.
