Valade scores game-winner as Huskies come-from-behind to beat Aigles Bleus 5-4 in home opener

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Reid Valade scored the game-winning goal 13:31 into the third period, delivering the Huskies an epic come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in their Atlantic University Sport men's hockey home-opener on Saturday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

In front of a big crowd of 429 fans, including many Huskies men's hockey alumni, the homecoming game began with a ceremonial puck-drop from members of the 2009-10 Saint Mary's Huskies men's hockey National Championship winning team, hours after they were inducted into the Huskies Sport Hall of Fame.

Feeding off the energy of the home crowd, the Huskies were able to generate several early chances, but Aigles Bleus netminder Olivier Adam (Drummondville, QC) made some quality saves to keep the game scoreless.

That would pay off just under six minutes into the action, as forward Jeremy Lapointe (Drummondville, QC) fired a shot that was initially stopped by Huskies goalkeeper Ben West (Barrie, ON), but Carl-Anthony Masse (Riviere-du-Loup, QC) jumped on the loose puck and scored his first AUS goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead, 6:53 into play.

Just 30 seconds later, the Aigles Bleus doubled their lead, with forward Olivier Luc Hache (Savoie Landing, NB) picked up the puck in the neutral zone and carried it into Huskies territory, firing a high shot that beat a screened West to make it 2-0.

Moncton nearly added to their lead, but Ben West made a big save on Jules Boilard to keep the Huskies within two goals.

The Huskies got one back courtesy of a powerplay goal from Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS), as defenceman Ryan Hopkins (Lunenburg, NS) crashed the net, with his rebound bouncing out onto the stick of Chisholm, who snapped a shot high over Adam's blocker to cut the lead to 2-1, with 2:44 remaining in the first period.

Saint Mary's outshot Moncton 18-13 through the opening 20 minutes, but it was the visitors who took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Huskies equalized with a powerplay goal 7:10 into the second period, as a Ryan Hopkins dump-in behind the Aigles Bleus goal took a fortuitous bounce back to forward Jake Uberti (Toronto, ON) who scored to tie the game at 2-2.

But the Aigles Bleus regained their lead just a minute later. A Huskies turnover led to a breakaway for Olivier Luc Hache, but Ben West made two great saves, before Aigles Bleus forward Michael Cyr finally stuffed it into goal to give the Aigles Bleus a 3-2 advantage, 8:11 into the second period.

Once again, Saint Mary's was able to answer, this time with a shorthanded marker, as forward Matthew MacDonald (Halifax, NS) and defenceman Ethan Ritchie (Oakville, ON) broke out on a textbook two-on-one, with MacDonald saucing a perfect give-and-go pass to Ritchie, who scored his first goal as a Husky to tie it at 3-3, 10:33 into the second period.

The Huskies had a glorious chance to take their first lead of the night, but forward Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) fired a shot off the crossbar that somehow stayed out. The high scoring second period kept rolling, with Moncton once again taking the lead off of a powerplay goal from Jeremie Jacob, putting the visitors back ahead 4-3, 15:29 into the period.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 17-7 in the second period, taking a 30-25 advantage for the game, and a 4-3 lead into second intermission.

Midway through the third period, the Huskies equalized again, as Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) won a face-off to Reid Valade, who played a perfect pass to defenceman Jacob Holmes (Alliston, ON) pinching in from the right point, with Holmes firing a wicked wrist shot high on Adam to tie the game at 4-4, 9:13 into the third period.

Just over four minutes later the Huskies took their first lead of the night. Defenceman Connor Olson (London, ON) won the puck in the Huskies zone and patiently waited before firing a perfect bank pass off the boards to Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON), who played a backhand saucer pass onto the stick of Reid Valade, who scored his third goal of the season, putting the Huskies ahead 5-4 at the 13:31 mark of the third period.

The Aigles Bleus pushed for an equalizer, but Ben West made several solid saves. The Huskies nearly added an empty net insurance goal, but a tremendous diving effort from the Aigles Bleus' Jeremy Lapointe kept the visitors within one. But one last Ben West save and the final whistle blew on the Huskies come-from-behind 5-4 win.

Reid Valade was named Player of the Game with the game-winning goal. Will Chisholm (one goal, one assist) and Charlie Da Fonseca (two assists) had multi-point nights for the Huskies. Ben West stopped 34 shots for the win, while Olivier Adam made 28 saves in defeat.

The Huskies start the season 2-0-0, while the Aigles Bleus drop to 1-1-0.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 10, with Moncton hosting the Dalhousie Tigers (0-1-1), and the Huskies hosting the UPEI Panthers (1-1-0) at the Dauphinee Centre, with both games scheduled to drop the puck at 7 p.m. GET TICKETS.
